Super Mario Kart, in Javascript form

Ah good old JavaScript. Not thought of too fondly by game developers, but, web developers sure like to put it to good use to recreate games within your browser. Case in point, Jacob Seidelin is a dedicated hacker who is putting his talent with JS to great use. How you ask? By hacking together a prototype version of Super Mario Kart in Javascript! Or, Super Mario Kart JS, if you will.

Complete with two courses (Mushroom Cup Round 1 and 2), opponents and soundtrack, SMKJS runs on FireFox 2 and 3, Opera 9.27+ and Safari 3.1.1+. IE users miss out, as they should for now upgrading to a real web browser. It uses the canvas element to do most of the rendering and the code (available here) weighs in at a nicely minimal 11 Kb.

At the moment, there is no lap count and the AI is a bit crude, but there is basic collision detection, which at least holds you back long enough to determine where you can cut corners.

Nintendo’s first WiiWare title, straight out of Vienna

Plaettchen

With the announcement of Nintendo’s WiiWare, indie game developers around the world felt their extremities go numb, as the creative juices started flowing at the mere thought of being able to develop a title for this generation’s breakout console. Whether Nintendo will be as indie-friendly as everyone hopes remains to be seen, but, they certainly are taking an interesting first step, by featuring Plättchen - Twist and Paint as the first official WiiWare title. Developed by a relatively unknown firm named Bplus in the outskirts of Vienna, Austria and featuring a German name which will surely confuse the hell out of many in the west, but no doubt excite the German-obsessed Japanese market, Plättchen is described as a puzzle-shooter, whose concept was approved by Nintendo in April 2007. Hopefully some screenshots or videos will appear soon and more information on the upcoming Wii and DS titles Bplus have in development will come to light, which we’ll surely post here immediately.

Raving Rabbids 2 teaser trailer

Raving Rabbids 2

With everyone going mental over Ubisoft these days, I thought it would only be right to post up the Raving Rabbids 2 teaser trailer which Jeux France recently broke all over town. All CG, there is no gameplay footage anywhere to be found in this video, but naturally we’ll be seeing much much more over the coming weeks from these wacky bunnies.

Video and press release after the jump..

Bye bye Nintendo Power?

Nintendo Power

As a kid, there was nothing more exciting than having a new issue of Nintendo Power dropped into my mailbox. NP was the end all, be all of NES gaming, featuring articles, ads and photos of the hottest new games coming out for one of the hottest video game systems of all time. If rumors along the mill are to be believed, the once king of gaming magazines is set to shut it’s doors, at least on a print version, soon. No official word is available yet on the demise, but I certainly hope they go the portal route with Nintendo Power, creating a Nintendo-centered social networking news and blogging site that extended with Wii browsing support, including the long rumored e-versions of NP back issues.

Microsoft thinks the Wii is only for kids

zing.jpg

It seems Microsoft just isn’t feeling the Wii60 love anymore now that Sony has won a few minor PR battles in the UK. In a recent report by Daily Tech, Microsoft’s Xbox platform and Live product manager, John Rodman, implied that Wii customers are kids saying:

We don’t feel like the Wii customer and the Xbox customer are the same thing. We think that as soon as the Wii customer turns 14 they want something else.

Ouch!

Shuttle XPC X200MC looks familiar

xpc.jpg

Shuttle has always been a special company. Always affordable to computer enthusiasts on the VAR level, Shuttle is known for staying current with stylish industrial design on top of affordable budget PC hardware. But sometimes borrowing from other influences a tad obviously. Which seems to be the case (at least to me) for their latest media center PC, the XPC X200MC, which measures in at just a miniature 5.5 cm tall and (surprisingly) thin, about 3 DVD cases, I’d say. It features an Intel GMA950 on-board graphics chip with DVI and VGA out, multi-channel digital audio out, room for an Intel Core Duo mobile processor, room for up to 2GB of RAM and an integrated TV tuner card with remote for all your digital video or home entertainment needs. Oh, it also looks a little bit like a Wii. There, I said it.

Larger shot after the jump..

Bomberman Land Wii screenshots

bombwii.jpg

Recently stumbled upon some screenshots for the upcoming Bomberman Land N64 Wii from Japan, which don’t paint a pretty picture for Bomberman fans. With Bomberman on the VC, does anyone get the feeling this is anything more than filler? Come on Nintendo, get some 3rd party support but at least make ‘em work for it a little. Sheesh. Bomberman Land for the Nintendo Wii is out in Japan March 8th.

Take a peek after the jump..

Wiiminder - Tabbed browser interface for your Wii

wiiminder.jpg

As many already know, I’m all about the Wii and most definitely about Wii web browsing. The things that people are doing with Opera on the Wii are already exciting as hell and things just keep getting better. From the crew behind Warp Pipe comes Wiiminder, an extremely nifty tabbed browser interface for your Wii browser, giving you access to tabbed browsing (how could this be left out of Opera Wii!?), nifty little home and favorites tools and a more pleasant user experience while surfing the ‘net.

Watch Wiiminder in action after the jump..

No More Heroes supports 480p and widescreen, more violent than Manhunt 2

nomore.jpg

In a recent interview with IGN, Killer 7 director Goichi Suda has revealed some neat little tidbits about his upcoming mature Wii title, No More Heroes. Set to be a violent, open world sandbox, heavily influenced by Rockstar Games’ GTA brand, Suda is promising to make No More Heroes more violent than Manhunt 2, support progressive and widescreen graphics and also make a damn nice looking follow up to Killer 7! Though I’m not a huge fan of mature titles on the Wii, I’m extremely happy to see Nintendo opening up a bit more to mature styles of gameplay.
